Although we are all sad we will see him less frequently, we know he is hard to get rid of completely and will be back for regular training. He will be training while in Wisconsin and is expected to test for Shodan in 2008. Gambatte kudasai!

June 2nd-4th, Albuquerque, NM The National IMAF Congress ia a national gathering of elite martial artists that draws participants from all over the world. This is a ‘don't miss’ event featuring top Japanese instructors in Iaido, Aikido, Jujutsu, Karatedo, Judo, Kendo, and Kobudo (ancient martial arts). Roach Sensei, an American Regional Director for the Kokusai Budoin, attends annually. You can learn more about this event by contacting Yama Oroshi Dojo or by visiting Kokusai Budoin/ IMAF's website: www.imaf.com Review: The weekend was an outstanding success. Barerra Sensei proved to be the consumate host and martial arts professional. Roach Sensei, one of the American Regional Directors of the Kokusai Budoin, received high honors at the formal dinner and reception for Japanese and American dignitaries. He was even given the honor of being unducted as an honorary Sherriff's Deputy in Albuquerque's Bernadillo County! The highlight of the Seminar was when Iwasa Sensei pulled Roach Sensei and his Uchi Deshi aside to discuss the changes that the new Soke has made to the performance of the waza. Iwasa and Ochiai Sensei have been travelling to Kyoto regularly to work with the 22nd Soke of the Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu. After some discussion, Iwasa Sensei presented Roach Sensei with a beautiful piece of bamboo, on which he had written some stunning calligraphy. Dont miss IMAF American Seminars next year! Iaido and Judo Seminar In Salt Lake City!! July 28th, 29th & 30th
Don't miss this opportunity to train with Suino Sensei, a Shihan 7th Dan in Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu and Shihan, 6th Dan in Kodokan Judo. Suino Sensei was the in-home student of Yamagushi Katsuo (10th Dan Meijin), one of the most respected technicians of iaido in Japan. Suino Sensei went on to become the four-time all Kanto sword-forms Champion under Yamaguchi Sensei's instruction. We are honored to host Sensei for a weekend of training and hope you will join us. The event will take place at the Utah Aikikai/ Yama Oroshi Iaido Dojo location. The weekend's fee-schedule is broken down to allow individual classes to be attended, however, costs have been kept deliberately low to encourage attendance. We welcome students from other dojos and martial arts, but members of the SMAA will receive an additional discount. Call or email for more information. UPDATE: The weekend was fantastic, and of course, exhausting. Classes focussed on Batto Ho No Bu, Batto Ho No Oku Waza, Seiza No Bu, and Tachi Uchi No Kurai. Tachi Uchi No Kurai is Muso Jikiden Eishi-Ryu's first set of partnered bokken techniques. They are designed to develop a sense of timing, distance, and connection to an apponent. These techniques are usually taught at nidan-yondan level because they place emphesis on actual partnered combat strategies. The aggressive element of iaido is often downplayed as it is seen to inhibit spiritual development. So, this was a rare treat for many of our junior students. Thanks again to Suino Sensei who is always gracious, kind, and offers outstanding instruction! |
